After Noah's family survived the Great Flood in the Ark, Noah's 3 sons started spreading across the globe in Genesis 10:6. Ham's descendants, called Hamites, initially dominated the Middle East & Africa (especially in Canaan & Egypt). Quite possibly, Assyrians and Babylonians had both Semitic & Hamite descent since Genesis 10:8-12 stated Ham's son, Cush, built several towns in Mesopotamia. The only reference to the Hamite term appears in NIV in 1 Chronicles 4:40.

Ham only appears early in the Bible in Genesis 5:32; 6:10; 7:13; 9:18, 22; 10:1,6-20 and 1 Chronicles 1:4, 8-16.

The land where Ham lived has mentions in Genesis 14:5 and Psalms 78:51; 105:23, 27; 106:22.

According to Genesis 10, these descendants include: the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, Pathrusites, Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came), Caphtorites (Cyprus apparently was named Caphtor at some point), Hittites, Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. There is some speculation that the Sinites became the Chinese people.
