Simon and Andrew's father had mentions with 4 different variations of his first name. In the New International Version (NIV), their father was called Jonah in Matthew 16:17, then John in John 1:42 and 21:15-17 while King James stated him as Jonas in John 21:15-17 and Jona in John 1:42. In accordance with the John reference of the father, Matthew 16:17 called Peter, Simon Barjona (son of Jona) in the King James version.
Jesus called this disciple/apostle Cephas (Peter) - John 1:40-42 (NIV). This passage
denotes the 4 variations of Simon Peter's name.
40. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).
42. And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).
Luke 4:38-39:
38. Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
39. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
The 2 followers of John the Baptist's in Luke 7:18-35 quite possibly were Andrew and his brother Simon Peter.
Peter showed up in numerous scenes before and after Jesus was resurrected.
Matthew 16:13-19:
13. When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
14. They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
15. "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
16. Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17. Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
18. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
Peter was knowledgeable of the scripture when he quoted Psalms when they prepared to replace Judas Iscariot. Acts 1:13-20:
13. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
14. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
15. In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)
16. and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus--
17. he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."
18. (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
19. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20. "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, "`May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, "`May another take his place of leadership.'
Although (Simon) Peter was flawed, like Moses and David, he desired to please God.
