Israel (Northern Kingdom)
The Northern Kingdom was comprised of the territory occupied by 10 of 12 tribes (sons) of Jacob after Joshua led them back to Canaan. King Saul was ordained the first king of the Israelites by Samuel. During his tenure as king, a lot of the Middle East was conquered with the help of his apprentice, David. When David began getting more credit than Saul for the victories, he tried to kill David several times and the kingdom split. Supporters of David called themselves the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
When those descendants of Jacob refused to follow God, they were overrun by the Assyrians & taken from this land to the Mesopotamian region as prisoners of war. The Northern Kingdom was known as Israel long before the current nation of Israel existed.
